The Salzmann building, a historical structure in Düsseldorf, has secured its future for the long term. Dr. Volker Wiegel, COO of LEG Immobilien AG, confirmed that a satisfactory and pragmatic solution has been found with the city, ensuring the continuation of the building's current usage concept until the end of 2063.
The Salzmann building, originally the headquarters of the paper manufacturer Jagenberg, designed by architect Heinrich Salzmann, was declared a historical monument in 1984. After a renovation in 1994, the building complex now houses 85 social and student apartments, 36 residential and artist studios, and office spaces for non-profit organizations.
The building complex currently hosts the Bürgerhaus Bilk, Kunstraum Düsseldorf, Atelier am Eck, and Jazz-Schmiede, providing attractive exhibition and event spaces. These institutions contribute significantly to the cultural landscape of Düsseldorf.
Mayor Thomas Geisel expressed his pleasure at the long-term security of the Salzmann building. He acknowledged the joint effort of the city, Verein "Leben in der Fabrik e.V.", the state of NRW, and the then state-owned LEG, which developed the current usage concept in the 1980s.
Jost Budde, spokesperson for the tenants' council, expressed gratitude towards Mayor Geisel, the cultural department, and the housing department for their efforts in securing the future of the Salzmann building.
It is worth noting that the purpose bond for the public spaces and the social bond for the Salzmann building will expire in 2025 and 2027, respectively. However, the new contract secures the future of the building beyond these dates, ensuring its continued contribution to Düsseldorf's cultural and social fabric for decades to come.
