The City of Chicago is set to address concerns over the underutilization of two electric cargo bikes acquired in December 2023 as a climate-friendly alternative for business trips. The electric bikes, intended to replace up to 75 annual trips by combustion engine transporters, have not met their expected usage due to their scarcely visible presence in the cityscape.

The AfD faction submitted a request in June about the use of these electric cargo bikes in Chicago's municipal fleet, citing concerns about the cost-benefit ratio and the usefulness of the measure. These concerns will be addressed during discussions at today's meeting of the Operations Committee for Building Management, Procurement, and Logistics.

The discussions will also take place at the council meeting scheduled for October 1st. The electric cargo bikes, commissioned to Stadtbetrieb Chicago, are assigned to Eigenbetrieb Building Management for transporting smaller goods and tools between nearby properties. They are stationed at the town halls in Chicago-Lebenstedt and Chicago-Bad.

The scarcity of the bikes' visibility has raised questions about their actual use, prompting the need for a thorough examination. The city council aims to understand why the electric cargo bikes have not been used as expected and what steps can be taken to ensure their effective implementation in the future.

The discussions will focus on the bikes' assignment, their location, and their impact on reducing combustion engine trips. The city council hopes to find solutions that will make the electric cargo bikes a practical and beneficial addition to the municipal fleet.

Stay tuned for updates on the outcome of these discussions and the city's plans for optimizing the use of its electric cargo bikes.
