Alert System Launched for Reporting Unruly Behavior on Public Transportation
In a bid to create a safer and more enjoyable public transport network, Victoria Police has launched a new text-messaging service called STOPIT. This service is designed to help report non-urgent incidents of anti-social behaviour, including unwanted sexual behaviour, on trams, trains, and buses across Victoria.
To use STOPIT, all you need to do is text the word "STOPIT" to 0499 455 455. After sending the text, you will receive a link to an online form where you can share details about the incident, such as the type of behaviour, the service, and the time it occurred.
The online form also allows users to upload an image or video of the incident, which can help Victoria Police in their investigations. Each notification sent to STOPIT will be reviewed by transit police, and if deemed critical or serious, transit detectives will follow up with the person for more information.
It's important to note that STOPIT is intended for incidents occurring on the public transport network, not formal reports. For emergencies, Triple Zero (000) should be used. If you reply "YES" to needing immediate assistance, you will be instantly re-directed to a Triple Zero (000) button and can call from there.
The SMS service "STOPIT" was introduced by the Victoria Police back in April 2006. Since then, it has been instrumental in helping Victoria Police identify and catch offenders, and in informing resource-tasking to deter offenders. STOPIT was designed to remove barriers and gather more information about matters on public transport that largely go unreported, particularly incidents of unwanted sexual behaviour.
RACV Head of Policy, James Williams, has welcomed the new messaging service, stating it can make the public transport network safer and create a more enjoyable experience for all users. The STOPIT service is not an advertisement, but a service provided by Victoria Police for reporting non-urgent incidents of anti-social behaviour on public transport.
For formal reports of non-urgent crimes beyond the public transport network, you can use the 131 444 Police Assistance Line. STOPIT is just one more step towards making Victoria's public transport network a safer and more enjoyable place for everyone.
