Annual Celebration of Bavarian Brews in Munich
The Munich Beer Festival, affectionately known as 'Wiesn' to locals, returned in 2013 for its 16-day run on the Theresienwiese meadows. This annual event, first held in 1810, is now the world's largest public festival, attracting millions of visitors each year.
During the festival, revellers could enjoy a variety of traditional activities, with the 'Oide Wiesn' section offering a glimpse into the festival's rich history. This historical section, opened in 2010, showcases traditional aspects of the festival, including whip cracking and Tyrolean dances.
One of the highlights of the 'Oide Wiesn' was the traditional food and drink. Beer, served in traditional gray ceramic mugs, was priced between 9.40 and 9.85 euros per liter. For those seeking heartier fare, the prices for individual foods were approximately: half chicken (½ Hendl) around €17.50, pork sausages (Schweinswürstl) about €13.50, pork knuckle (Schweinshaxn) €25.50, pork roast (Schweinsbraten) €22.50, and a Maß (1-liter beer) about €15.40, depending on the tent.
Visitors to the 'Tradition' tent at the 'Oide Wiesn' could immerse themselves in the festival's rich culture, enjoying traditional dishes, wind instrument music, and traditional attire. For those with dietary restrictions, the 'Herzkasperl' tent offered vegan dishes.
The Munich Beer Festival in 2013 also featured folk music at various locations, adding to the festive atmosphere. The festival ran from September 21 to October 6, 2013, offering a taste of Bavarian tradition, local hospitality, and folk music to all who attended.
