Apple Proposes New Strategy to Enhance HomeKit's Utility

Apple's HomeKit Secure Video and HomeKit routers are making strides in the smart home industry, with a strong emphasis on privacy and security.

The latest devices compatible with HomeKit Secure Video include the Logitech Circle View Camera and the Aqara G410 Doorbell Camera Hub. These devices fully support HomeKit Secure Video features, offering users a secure way to monitor their homes.

To enable remote viewing, notifications, and video analysis on-device, a home hub device such as an iPad, HomePod, or Apple TV running tvOS 13.2/iPadOS 13.2 or later is required.

The Aqara G410 Doorbell Camera Hub, in addition to supporting HomeKit Secure Video, also acts as a Thread Border Router and a Matter Controller, enhancing its integration into Apple’s smart home ecosystem. It supports multiple wireless bands (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi) and Bluetooth, expanding compatibility with HomeKit routers that support these standards.

iCloud+ plans are necessary for storing videos securely and without counting against data limits. Users with a 200GB iCloud plan can have one HomeKit Secure Video camera, while users with a 2TB iCloud plan can have up to 5 HomeKit Secure Video cameras.

The storage of video data from a HomeKit Secure Video-enabled camera does not count against the user's storage limit. Users can store up to 10 days of footage from a HomeKit Secure Video-enabled camera at no extra charge.

The focus on privacy and security with HomeKit Secure Video and HomeKit routers could make HomeKit more appealing to smart homeowners concerned about their data's safety. This is the first time Apple has addressed a huge concern among smart homeowners regarding security and privacy with HomeKit.

The availability of HomeKit-compatible routers from various manufacturers, such as Linksys, Eero, and internet service providers like Charter Spectrum, suggests a growing ecosystem for HomeKit. The addition of HomeKit to routers could provide an extra layer of security for smart home networks. HomeKit routers will enable firewalls to quarantine off hacked devices from the rest of the network.

In summary, the latest ecosystem for HomeKit Secure Video and HomeKit routers centres on devices that support Thread and Matter protocols, integration with Apple home hubs, and cameras like the Logitech Circle View and Aqara G410 that leverage these capabilities. The slow addition of greater HomeKit functionality over the past few years indicates Apple's continued focus on improving HomeKit.
