Apple to Start Mass Production of Foldable iPhone in India by 2026
Apple is expanding its production in India, aiming to start mass production of devices, including a foldable iPhone, by 2026. The tech giant has already invested heavily in factories, with over 25% of its smartphones assembled in the country. It has also created over 350,000 jobs in the past five years.
Apple's current suppliers in India include Tata Electronics, Titan Engineering, Avary, and others. The company has recently engaged new suppliers for production expansion, though the specific names were not disclosed. This move is part of Apple's strategy to reduce development time and mitigate labor shortages in Taiwan.
Apple's approach in India mirrors its strategy in China, where it works closely with contract manufacturers and component suppliers. By 2025, around 1.4 million people are expected to work in Apple production in India, with 350,000 dedicated to iPhone production at a single location. The company is actively trying to build local structures, creating more jobs for suppliers. Around 230,000 jobs have already been created due to Apple's influence, with 120,000 created directly due to larger orders.
Apple's increased production in India is partly driven by US tariffs, despite the Trump administration's desire for Apple's production to return to the US. The company's expansion in India is set to create more jobs and boost the local economy.
