Artist Mike Butkus Sets Up New Studio in Morro Bay

Mike Butkus, an award-winning concept artist, has moved his studio from Burbank, California, to Morro Bay on the Central Coast. The change of location marks a new chapter in Butkus' career, as he continues to create stunning artwork for games, films, TV series, books, and toy designs for companies like Netflix and HBO.

Butkus' new studio spans approximately 3,000 square feet and is a short walk from the beach. The space offers ample room for his unique studio setup, which includes an assistant skeleton named Jerry, studio portrait lights, a redwood glass palette with a slide-out oil paint drawer, model cars, and a CO2 canister for his airbrush.

The artist's latest creation is a Starfield poster artwork, executed using acrylic and watercolour. Butkus believes that having a dedicated workspace, separate from home life, is crucial for his line of work, which doesn't have a set schedule.

Butkus' studio serves not only as a creative hub but also as a venue for teaching anatomy classes, hosting photoshoots, and storing extra equipment. His previous studio in Burbank was large and well-equipped, but lacked inspiration and was situated in a city with traffic and smog. In contrast, his studio in Hawaii was smaller but offered a profound lifestyle change, allowing him to spend more time with his family and enjoy outdoor activities.

Butkus' work extends beyond the digital realm. He has created a painting for the History Channel's Doomsday Preppers and designs for a board game called Mad Monster Bash for his gaming business Mad Monster Company. He has also worked on the Blu-ray Collector's Edition of The Strangers: Chapter 1 for Lionsgate and created artwork for the Bethesda video game Starfield and a traditional movie poster for Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes for 20th Century Fox.

Butkus is currently working on a book called Traveller's Guide to Drawing the Extraordinary Creatures of the Universe Volume 1: Aetherin, set to release in early 2025. His work can be found on his website, where fans can admire his impressive portfolio and keep up with his latest projects.

Despite the positive changes, Butkus' move to Morro Bay hasn't been without its challenges. He has cultivated a friendship with a family of bluebirds outside his studio, but has received glares from a retired chiropractor couple living across the street. Regardless, Butkus remains dedicated to his craft and looks forward to what the future holds.
