German artist Constanze Klar (45) establishes a beachfront bar on the quaint island of Spiekeroog, aiming to create a space for open dialogues and introspection amidst ongoing societal turmoil. Speaking to the German Press Agency, she elaborates on her aspirations for the bar: "Nowadays, people find it hard to tolerate divergent opinions," she admits. "This bar aims to serve as a meeting point, where individuals from all walks of life can freely exchange ideas."
Winning this year's Spiekeroog Tent Pitch Residency, Klar spends her time in the dunes, submerged in the untouched beauty of the island. The residency lasts until the 4th of July, and the bar, meticulously crafted from repurposed cabinetry, serves as the heart of her art project titled, "The Last Call."
Set on the tranquil sands of this North Sea island, "The Last Call" aims to initiate thought-provoking conversation surrounding the current state of society. Klar acknowledges concerns over a political shift in Germany, citing a recent motion passed in the Bundestag regarding migration policy by the Union and AfD. She also voices worries about societal divisions, where individuals are either excluded or undervalued.
Guests shopping for drinks at the bar are invited to engage in meaningful discussions with the artist, and with one another. Klar records these conversations, intending to transform them into a moving animation featuring clay figures, to be exhibited on the island in early July.
