Bavarian castle authorities are tasked with a unique responsibility on Rosen Island
In the heart of Bavaria, nestled on the picturesque Starnberger See, lies the enchanting Rose Island. Originally known as Woerth, it was purchased by King Maximilian II of Bavaria in 1850 and has since become a haven for over 70 different rose varieties.
The Bavarian Palace Administration is currently seeking a dedicated horticulturist or gardener to join their team at Rose Island and Park Feldafing. The full-time position, with an application deadline of August 15th, is set to begin on December 1st.
The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining the island's beautiful rose garden, which includes some of the oldest roses in existence, such as the Officinalis (around 1300), Maxima (before 1500), Versicolor (1581), and Tuscany (before 1596).
During the winter months, the horticulturist's duties will include protecting plants from frost, pruning dormant roses and shrubs, cleaning and maintaining gardening tools and infrastructure, planning for the next growing season, and monitoring for and managing any winter pests or diseases.
In case of snowfall, it may be necessary to free some plants from the snow load to prevent breakage. Tasks during the growing season will focus on watering, fertilizing, and mowing the gardens, as well as pruning roses and caring for the beds.
The Rose Island, home to rare roses like the green rose Viridiflora (1855), the Bulgarian oil rose Trigintipetala (1689), and Celeste (1759), is only accessible by boat. Visitors can reach it via ferry from Feldafing from May to October, while employees can access it all year round via a government-owned boat.
The iconic Casino, a small villa on the island, is open for guided tours. The Rose Island is a popular tourist destination, particularly during the rose bloom in June.
Franz Kreuter built the royal villa on the island, while Peter Joseph Lenné planned the garden. The island covers an area of 2.56 hectares.
