Berlin Explores Vertical Parking Towers to Free Up Urban Space

Berlin is exploring innovative solutions to maximise urban space. One such idea, 'Free Streets for All', proposes vertical parking towers to free up ground-level areas for greenery and housing.

The initiative, backed by the 'Alliance of the Free Street', aims to repurpose sealed parking lots. Vertical parking towers, developed by Munich's VePa Vertical Parking GmbH and Lindner Planning Office, can accommodate up to 12 cars on just 45 square meters.

Berlin's Senator for Urban Development, Petra Kahlfeldt, supports this goal, stating that today's urban society should strive to reclaim sealed surfaces. Pilot projects are already being considered in Munich and Berlin. These towers can be erected swiftly and equipped with green roofs and photovoltaic elements, winning back large areas for green spaces or residential buildings. The struggle for scarce surface resources in urban areas is intensifying, making innovative solutions like vertical parking increasingly appealing.

Vertical parking towers could significantly reduce the space required for parking lots, freeing up valuable urban land. With concrete implementation plans underway in Munich and Berlin, this innovative approach could help reclaim sealed surfaces, contributing to greener, more liveable cities.
