Berlin Urged to Speed Up Bicycle Parking Projects as Main Station and Ostkreuz Lag

Berlin is under pressure to expedite its bicycle parking projects, with plans for the main station and Ostkreuz falling behind schedule. The city must navigate bureaucracy to ensure these projects progress smoothly, as seen in the successful completion of the distinctive Eberswalde bike parking garage.

Eberswalde's garage, featuring a unique wood-concrete construction and a larch wood roof, showcases that cities can deliver functional and architecturally impressive bike parking facilities. It offers 604 spaces, including provisions for cargo bicycles and e-bikes, along with amenities like air pumps and lockable boxes. This project addresses increasing demand and improves cyclist infrastructure.

Meanwhile, Berlin's main station and Ostkreuz projects are delayed, with completion dates pushed back to 2028 or later. The city is also planning a similar project at Schöneweide station, designed by Leitplan, the firm behind Eberswalde's garage. To tide over, Berlin's Bike+Ride Offensive is creating mobile collective locking facilities and new bike racks, with over 140 secure parking spots planned by the end of 2025.

Berlin must learn from Eberswalde's success and accelerate its bike parking projects. The city should aim to complete the main station and Ostkreuz projects on time, while also pushing forward with plans for Schöneweide. In the meantime, interim measures like the Bike+Ride Offensive will help address cyclists' parking needs.
