Ever wondered how many finches, robins, sparrows, or blue tits flutter around your backyard or local park? The Nature Conservation Union Germany (NABU) and Bavarian Nature Conservation Association LBV are keen to find out, and they're asking for your help! During the "Hour of Backyard Birding" from May 9 to 11, you're invited to join the fun and participate in this exciting bird-counting event.

Common garden birds such as robins, tits, and sparrows will be the focus of this action. With a bit of luck, keen bird enthusiasts might even catch a glimpse of the "Bird of the Year" 2025, the redstart, which has flown back from its winter quarters. According to LBV biologist, Angelika Nelson, the redstart can often be seen hunting for insects in gardens during this time.

To participate, simply observe the birds outside your door for one hour during the designated counting period. The highest number of each species spotted at the same time is then reported via the internet, an app, or post. By joining in, you'll help gather insights into current developments in the bird world, complementing official population trends.

Whether you're a seasoned birdwatcher or just curious to learn more about the feathered friends in your neighborhood, the "Hour of Backyard Birding" is an excellent opportunity for everyone to get involved in citizen science and support nature conservation efforts in Germany.

So, grab your binoculars, download the NABU or LBV app, or head to their websites for detailed instructions and report submission forms. Let's work together to protect and understand Germany's precious bird populations!

Note: Expected bird species count during the event typically includes a diverse variety of common garden birds, potentially around 20-30 species though this may vary based on location and time of year. Participants are invited to count all bird species they spot during the one-hour observation period and report their findings via the NABU or LBV reporting system.

By participating in the "Hour of Backyard Birding" with NABU and LBV, you can contribute to environmental protection and support the health of your local bird community. This event encourages a lifestyle of home-and-garden birdwatching, promoting awareness and conservation efforts for a diverse range of common garden birds.
