Bristol's River Malago Restoration Plan Unveiled for Bedminster Green
Bristol City Council has submitted plans to restore part of the River Malago as part of the Bedminster Green regeneration scheme. The project aims to celebrate the city's industrial heritage, reduce flood risk, and improve local biodiversity.
The restoration will involve bringing a section of the river above ground and restoring it to its natural form. This will be done in phases from 2023, coordinated with other works at Bedminster Green. The project aims to support wildlife by altering the flow speed of the river and widening the river corridor. Metal grid bars, known as trash screens, will be installed to trap debris and prevent blockages.
The restoration will also help to mitigate flood risk by creating an extra 2,226m3 of flood storage. Proposals include restoring the old penstock structure and improving historic channel walls. A new seating area and an accessible path and boardwalk will be created to improve access to the river's edge.
The project is a collaborative effort to increase biodiversity and tackle flood risk management. If approved, construction work will begin in phases from 2023. Bristol City Council has submitted a planning application for this project as part of the Bedminster Green regeneration scheme.
