City Installs Squirrel Bridges to Safely Connect Parks and Stations
Local authorities and environmental groups have collaborated to create a unique solution for city squirrels: three suspension bridges connecting parks to alleys and stations. The innovative project, costing 6,000 euros, has sparked excitement among local departments, politics, and media.
The squirrel bridges, installed in Stadtpark, Herzogspark, and Doernbergpark, now allow squirrels to safely cross streets. These bridges connect the parks to Alleenring, Herrenplatz, and Doernbergpark, enabling the squirrels to traverse as far as the station. To monitor the use of these new paths, wildlife cameras have been set up. Additionally, feeding boxes will be attached to trees to guide squirrels to their new routes quickly.
Constructed by the local city authorities in cooperation with environmental organizations, the bridges allow squirrels to climb above cars and move freely from tree to tree when changing locations. This measure aims to protect the squirrels and increase biodiversity in the city.
The squirrel bridges, costing 6,000 euros, have been praised as a well-worth investment by local authorities. With wildlife cameras monitoring usage and feeding boxes guiding squirrels, these bridges are expected to significantly improve the squirrels' safety and mobility, contributing to increased biodiversity in the city.
