City park in Regensburg will not receive a new construction of a banquet hall
In the heart of Regensburg, a city known for its rich history and beautiful parks, a new plan has been proposed, causing a stir among local conservationists. The Bavarian Conservation Association has expressed concerns over the proposed measures in the city park, specifically focusing on an area referred to administratively as the "festival meadow."
The "festival meadow" is, in reality, an "art-rich gravel lawn with irrigation system," situated southwest of the Ostdeutsche Galerie. The plan, which includes the renovation of an over 50-year-old artwork by Pino Poggi, known as fountain H, also involves stabilizing two footpaths and setting up a power supply pillar.
The gravel area is seen as a suitable solution for events such as the Night in Blue, the Children's Citizens' Festival, and "all other events that may still come." However, the Bavarian Conservation Association fears that this could lead to increased events in the city park, potentially causing environmental degradation and harm to the park's biodiversity.
City council members across all factions find the proposal essentially good, but have questions about the costs for the fountain renovation. The head of the garden office, Michael Daschner, has suggested that a "blossoming meadow" could be created before and after events on the planned area, which could help improve the ecology of the area.
Thomas Thurow (Bridge) has expressed confidence in the administration and its licensing practices, stating that the festival grounds will "not be a fairground or festival site." Helene Sigloch (Greens) asked if there are more events planned for the city park, to which Artinger, the city's mayor, responded that there is no intention to increase events in the city park.
The CSU has raised concerns that a blossoming meadow on gravel cannot be walked on barefoot, while Chairman Raimund Schoberer of the Bavarian Conservation Association speaks of "greenwashing." The city of Regensburg, however, is clear that it does not intend to create a festival meadow in the city park.
Mayor Artinger is visibly upset by the criticism, stating that the person making the claims harbors a "bottomless mistrust" in the administration. The city is planning several measures in the city park, costing around 450,000 euros. Despite the concerns, the plan is moving forward, with the first step being the renovation of fountain H.
The Bavarian Conservation Association's concerns highlight the delicate balance between urban development and preserving the natural and ecological qualities of city parks. As the city of Regensburg moves forward with its plan, it will be interesting to see how these concerns are addressed and how the "festival meadow" develops.
The renovation plan for fountain H, situated in the festival meadow, a previously art-rich gravel lawn with irrigation system, might impact the home-and-garden lifestyle of Regensburg's city park, raising fears about its potential environmental degradation and harm to biodiversity among the Bavarian Conservation Association. City council members are considering the creation of a blossoming meadow before and after events on the planned area as a solution to improve the ecology of the area.
