Concern over a stork's next in the region of Thuringia

In a heartwarming display of community spirit, residents of Melkers, Thuringia, have rallied around a family of storks after one of the adult birds was tragically injured.

On Wednesday afternoon (2nd July), a stork crashed into a garden in Melkers, leaving its right wing almost completely shattered. Reports suggest that the downed bird belonged to the group of storks that have made a home on a chimney about 33 meters high, housing three young storks.

Despite the injury, it appears that one adult bird has been regularly supplying the young storks, ensuring their survival. This behaviour is not uncommon among storks, who are known for their strong parental care. Even when faced with adversity, one parent often takes on the responsibility of providing food and protection to the chicks if the other is unable to contribute.

The community has shown great concern for the injured bird, with numerous calls made from residents reporting flight movements, but nothing was certain at first. However, on Thursday (3rd July), both parent birds were seen together at the nest again, a sign that the breeding pair is intact.

Residents in Melkers have initiated an immediate aid action, providing food for the storks. A locally based company even placed a cooling box with fish food for the storks near the nest. The young storks are dependent on the care of both parent birds, and the community's support could be crucial if only one adult remains.

From an animal welfare perspective, the injured stork was euthanized. Experts suggest that an operation for the injured stork would be complicated and without prospect, making the decision a difficult one.

However, the story does not end there. A private drone confirmed that all three young storks from Thuringia are alive and well. This behaviour aligns with the general pattern that storks are dedicated parents, often adapting to challenges to maximise chick survival.

This incident serves as a reminder of the strong bond between storks and their young, as well as the community's commitment to supporting wildlife in need. The nest, clearly visible in Melkers, Thuringia, continues to house the young storks, who are now ready for the next step in their journey.

Home and garden supplies from a local company were given to support the stork family in Melkers, as residents rallied around them. The community's lifestyle, including their concern for wildlife, highlighted a bond that aligns with storks' strong parental care and dedication.
