Construction in Lankwitz: First REWE with rooftop farm in Berlin begins construction
In an exciting development for the world of sustainable shopping, the upcoming REWE market in Berlin-Lankwitz is set to revolutionise the way we think about supermarkets. This new store, scheduled to open in spring 2026 at Malteser Straße 128, is not just another shopping destination—it's a showcase for innovative green technology and resource-saving design.
The Berlin REWE market is, in fact, a further developed and optimised version of the original model implemented in Wiesbaden in 2021. This market, which has been growing basil and fish using the "Green Farming" concept, has already proven the concept's viability. The Wiesbaden REWE market, with its rooftop farm and aquaponics system supplied by ECF Farmsystems, raises approximately 20,000 fish annually on 230 square meters, yielding about one ton of fish meat per month.
The new Berlin store will also boast its own rooftop farm, growing salad mixes for other REWE branches. The rooftop greenhouse, covering an area of 2,800 square meters, will utilise a hydroponic system, allowing salad to thrive in a nutrient solution. The Berlin company "Infarm" will be responsible for growing the salad on the roof, supplying REWE stores in the region. What's more, the harvest in the rooftop greenhouse can be fully automated and year-round, ensuring a consistent supply of fresh produce.
The market hall of the new store will be made of wood and supported on pillars, allowing plenty of daylight into the supermarket. This timber construction not only reduces the concrete requirement by about 25 percent but also binds approximately 930 tons of CO2 equivalent. The market hall will be supplied entirely with eco-power, and photovoltaic systems will be created on the roof, while collected rainwater will be used to water the plants.
The topping-out ceremony for the supermarket was held on September 17, 2025, marking a significant milestone in the construction process. The REWE market in Berlin-Lankwitz, with the "Green Farming" concept, began construction in March 2025. The opening is planned for May 2026, making this innovative supermarket a highly anticipated addition to the city's landscape.
This new REWE market in Berlin is not only the city's first market with a rooftop farm that can be replicated at other locations, but it's also a testament to REWE's commitment to sustainability. The rooftop farm on the Berlin REWE supermarket will grow salad mixes for approximately 500 REWE markets in the capital region, demonstrating the potential for this concept to make a significant impact on the food supply chain.
With its focus on sustainability, resource-saving design, and innovative farming techniques, the new REWE market in Berlin is setting a new standard for supermarkets worldwide. It's a shining example of how businesses can embrace green technology and make a positive impact on the environment, all while providing consumers with fresh, locally-grown produce.
