Construction on the bridge crossing the White Elster in Schlosspark Lützschena commences on September 29th.
The historic Specks Hof Castle Park in Leipzig-Lützschena is set to undergo a significant renovation, as the city prepares to rebuild the "Schlossweg III" bridge. The bridge, serving as a crucial access point for pedestrians and cyclists between Lützschena and Böhlitz-Ehrenberg, has been in service since 1992 but is now in need of replacement due to rotting and fungus-affected supporting parts.
The 200-year-old park, a listed site in the northwest of the city, is a significant landscape park in Saxony. It combines typical elements of floodplain landscapes with characteristic park elements, featuring a water system with ponds and streams between the White Elster and the Dog Water. The park, created by Maximilian Freiherr Speck von Sternburg, is a testament to Leipzig's history, with Speck's Court, the former Sternburg brewery, and one of the most significant bourgeois art collections attributable to him.
The rebuilding project is expected to commence on Monday, September 29, 2025, and is anticipated to be completed by spring 2026. During the construction period, the crossing will be completely closed, and pedestrians and cyclists will be redirected via the "White Bridge" into the Lützschena Castle Park.
The new bridge superstructure will be made of aluminum, a durable choice for the bridge's shaded, wet environment. Weighing almost nine tons, the new structure will be prefabricated in its entirety. The bridge will measure three meters wide and 23.5 meters long. Under the new bridge superstructure, a protective pipe will be installed to house the drinking water pipe and telecommunications cable.
The city will receive 728,000 euros from the budget for promoting road and bridge construction projects of municipal road authorities. The estimated cost for rebuilding the bridge is around 1.25 million euros, making it a substantial investment in the city's infrastructure.
The "Schlossweg III" bridge is located in the Flora-Fauna-Habitat, bird, and landscape protection area. The city is committed to ensuring that the construction process minimises any impact on the local environment and wildlife.
As the renovation progresses, visitors to the park can look forward to a modern, durable bridge that will serve the community for years to come. The Specks Hof Castle Park, with its rich history and beautiful surroundings, will continue to be a cherished part of Leipzig's landscape.
