A Tranquil Retreat in the Heart of Mumbai: SHROFFLEoN's Design at Four Seasons Residences
In the bustling city of Mumbai, a 3,400 sq ft apartment in the Four Seasons Residences has been transformed into a serene refuge, thanks to the creative minds of Kayzad Shroff and Maria IJ Leon. With minimal interaction with the homeowners, the duo, along with Lokendra Vora, designed this intimate and personal space entirely in the residents' absence.
The spatial shift in the apartment's design led to a rethinking of the home's spatial language. The designers aimed to create a space of tranquillity, a retreat from the cacophony of Mumbai's streets. One of the project's significant changes was the reconfiguration of the living room, which was rearranged to accommodate a den. The addition of the den required the relocation of the master bathroom, presenting one of the project's larger technical challenges.
The den, a warm nook in the apartment design, is lined entirely in ageing copper panels. This tactile richness gives the space a sense of amiability, making it feel intimate and personal, even without frequent input from the homeowners. The den's design subtly expresses the sensibilities of its occupants, with the use of muted materials, spatial interventions, and carefully curated artefacts.
The reconfigured living room now opens up to the den, creating a seamless flow between the two spaces. This spatial shift, along with the use of soft, muted colours and materials, helps to create a sense of calm and tranquillity throughout the apartment.
The apartment's design serves as a retreat from the city's urban din, providing its residents with a peaceful sanctuary in the heart of Mumbai. Despite the designers never meeting the homeowners, they were able to create a deeply personal and tranquil den that feels like a true reflection of the residents' sensibilities.
