Most of us neglect our hallways when it comes to decor because, let's face it, they're often an afterthought. Plus, it's difficult to figure out how to add visual interest without making it feel cramped or cluttered, especially in a small space like a hallway. But it's time to make that plain, function-focused spot a part of your home design!
After years of neglect, my hallway with its tired, pink carpet and pink lightbulbs left me feeling uninspired. It was a dark and narrow space that lacked character.
So, I gave it a makeover, embracing the farmhouse decor in 2018. Removing the carpeting and extending hardwood floors, adding a board and batten treatment, and upgrading the light fixtures were simple tweaks that made a significant difference.
However, as I started to update the living areas in my home, the farmhouse style no longer fit in. A water link burst pipe from the wall gave me the perfect opportunity to go ahead and remove the wall treatment and start fresh.
I wanted to keep the design simple and stylish to create a cohesive flow with the rest of my home's decor. I considered many options, from a large mirror to a gallery wall, but found a set of three art prints at a consignment store to be the perfect solution for my hallway.
I also installed a cheetah pattern hallway runner to add some fun and visual interest. The new look has made a massive difference, moving from a slightly cluttered farmhouse style to a modern, updated traditional design.
When working on your hallway decor ideas, follow these tips, tailoring them based on the available space and your design style:
1) Prioritize Lighting: Layer the lighting sources for overall brightness and flexibility. Consider recessed fixtures, directional spotlights, and wall sconces. Opt for wall wash lighting for even illumination and added depth.
2) Choose Sleek, Modern Fixtures: Contemporary light fixtures made from metallic or matte materials do wonders for adding ambiance and enhancing the sense of space.
3) Use Light and Neutral Colors: Light and neutral paint colors help create a bright and welcoming space, and they prevent the space from appearing cave-like.
4) Add Visual Interest to Walls: Hang a piece of artwork, install wall sconces, or incorporate a table and lamp at the end of the hallway (if possible) to add character.
5) Consider Mirrors: Mirrors reflect light, adding visual interest and the illusion of a larger space.
6) Eliminate Vertical Stripes: Avoid decorating with vertical stripes as they can make the hallway appear longer and narrower.
7) Opt for Minimalist Furniture: Select furniture with slim profiles to avoid cluttering the space.
