Car Washing on Sundays: An Outdated Tradition or a Necessary Rest?

  • *

On the Sunday, the vehicle remains uncleaned - Dirty Car Remains Uncleaned on Sundays

Taking a leisurely Sunday for a quick car clean — not an option in Rhineland-Palatinate just yet. While neighbors in Hesse are already diving into sudsy soaps and polishing away, critics in Rhineland-Palatinate voice their dissatisfaction with the current laws governing car washes.

For the Filling Station Interest Association, the Sunday car wash ban feels like a relic of the past. Working and operating car washes on Sundays is the norm in many other industries, they argue. Plus, many car washes operate without staff, meaning minimal interruption to the peaceful Sunday atmosphere.

Smaller filling station operators in Rhineland-Palatinate and other federal states stand to lose significant annual profits due to the ban, the association estimates. In fact, the potential loss can range between 5,000 and 10,000 euros.

Environmental aspects factor in as well. Car washes offer greater water efficiency than at-home washes, reducing the burden on local sewers and the environment.

A conversation with the Minister-President, Alexander Schweitzer (SPD), seems unlikely. Despite reaching out, there's been no response or invitation for dialogue.

Determining where car washing is allowed requires exploration of various laws: Car washing is prohibited in gardens or other unpaved areas, and fines may be imposed.

But what about chemical substances in wastewater? Even clear water contains harmful compounds that could potentially damage groundwater. The German Federal Environmental Agency (BUND) recommends using approved self-service car washes whenever possible to properly manage pollutants.

If car washing on your patio just doesn't appeal to you, continue to your favorite self-service car wash. According to the BUND, short programs are the way to go, saving both water and simplifying the process. Plus, car washes consume less water overall due to recycling processes.

Recent clarification from the Rhineland-Palatinate Ministry of the Interior reiterates that operating car washes and car wash locations on Sundays and holidays is indeed prohibited, rooted in the state's law on protecting Sundays and public holidays.

Colleagues at the German Trade Union Confederation (DGB) view Sunday as a sanctuary for relaxation, family, friends, and volunteering. They support the legal protection afforded to Sunday to maintain these values.

Koblenz state parliamentarian Stephan Wefelscheid questions the relevance of the ban in today's busy world, where both partners often work extended hours. He advocates for a reevaluation of the ban, similar to the call made by the Filling Station Interest Group.

As the debate continues, the balance between honoring tradition and adapting to modern lifestyles remains delicate. The controversy over car washing on Sundays represents a broader discussion about the role of "Sonntagsruhe" (Sunday rest) in society, striking a chord that resonates far beyond the confines of a car wash bay.

  • The Filling Station Interest Association argues that the Sunday car wash ban in Rhineland-Palatinate is outdated, pointing out that many industries have standard car wash operations on Sundays and that car washes can operate with minimal disruption to the peaceful Sunday atmosphere.
  • The debate over car washing on Sundays reflects a larger discussion about the role of "Sonntagsruhe" (Sunday rest) in society, emphasizing the balance between honoring tradition and adapting to modern lifestyles, particularly in the context of changing work patterns and the need for vocational training to adapt to these changes.
