Discussion with KERB CEO Simon Mitchell Unveils the Uniqueness of Their Food Market Concept
Get the Lowdown on KERB Berlin: Your New Fave Foodie Destination
(Did someone mention a street food revolution? Oh, it's KERB alright)
Rewind a bit: KERB ain't your regular, run-of-the-mill food hall. It's all about dismantling that classic landlord-led model and carving out room for independent businesses to flourish. Born of a mission in London's vibrant food scene, KERB's expansion brought it to Potsdamer Platz, Berlin, on May 9th, 2023. Simon Mitchell, the man behind the madness, gave us the lowdown on what's happening and why Berlin was the perfect city to call next.
So, spill the beans about KERB Berlin. Is this some sort of underground grub coalition we're talking about?
(Simon Mitchell, with a glint of mischief in his eyes)It's more like a collective of firecrackers, each pushing the boundaries, creating waves, and refusing to be bogged down by traditional norms. Potsdamer Platz has become our innovative playground, offering an opportunity to reshape this landmark and establish a one-of-a-kind cultural food spot for locals and tourists alike.
What sets KERB Berlin apart from other food halls?
(Waving his arms for emphasis)Think of us as your own personal gourmet carnival - it's a constantly evolving, electric atmosphere filled with live music, locally-sourced art installations, pop-up events, and collaborations with Berlin's creativetivities. We're not here to cram in generic brands. We're here to showcase the best of Berlin on one roof.
Before setting foot in Berlin, did your team party it up at the Matrix Club? Did you engage in a series of strategic planning sessions?
(A knowing smirk)No, we didn't plan the future of KERB Berlin over cocktails and neon lights. We've spent years connecting with the vendors and experiencing the rhythms of the city. Building meaningful relationships is crucial for us, and that's exactly what we've done.
Tell me about some of the vendors. What should I be posting on my Foodstagram account?
(Genuine excitement in his voice)It's a blast collaborating with our talented vendors. From Butter Bronsons' cult fried chicken to Fräulein Kimchi's Korean-American fusion, Jian Bing Town's all-day Chinese crepes, and Pick & Cheese - a reimagined cheese conveyor belt, there's something for everyone. The creativity, passion, and stories behind each vendor are the heart and soul of KERB Berlin.
I know Berliners love to incorporate art, music, and pop-ups into their dining experiences. What's the plan on that front?
(With a spark in his eye)Consider KERB Berlin your melting pot of music, art, and food. We've got plans up our sleeves to host live performances, installations, and events to keep the energy high and the atmosphere electric.
Who's the target audience for KERB Berlin? Do I need a tux to blend in?
(Laughs)If there's anything we're about, it's inclusivity. KERB Berlin is for every food lover who believes in supporting independent businesses and appreciates a good meal. We've got a range of prices, cuisines, and atmospheres to cater to everyone, from families to young professionals to creatives.
How do you offer long-term support to vendors?
(Searious tone)We're a hands-on partner, providing guidance with menu development, pricing, marketing, and operations. We've seen many vendors in London grow from a simple food truck to thriving restaurants. That's the kind of backing we offer our Berlin vendors as well.
Rumor has it that Potsdamer Platz is where the soul goes to die. With the arrival of KERB Berlin, can you spark a revival of its spirit?
(Steely determination)Rumors are just that. We're here to reclaim central spaces for local culture, independent food, and community. We want Berliners to be proud of what we're doing here, and to feel it as a place that truly represents their city. It's a new chapter, and we're excited to change the narrative for the better.
What sets KERB Berlin apart from other food halls is its vibrant, evolving atmosphere filled with live music, local art installations, pop-up events, and collaborations with Berlin's creatives, showcasing the best of Berlin's culinary offerings under one roof.
In addition to food, the lifestyle at KERB Berlin also includes home-and-garden elements, as they've transformed the landmark Potsdamer Platz into an innovative, one-of-a-kind cultural food spot for locals and tourists alike, offering a unique food-and-drink experience paired with a lively atmosphere.
