Displaced Ukrainians gratefully rehabilitate a recreational area in Cluj, Romania
In the heart of Cluj County, Romania, a remarkable story of gratitude and community spirit unfolds. Ukrainian refugees, in collaboration with local residents, have restored a playground in the Florești suburb, now known as the "Friendship Park."
This initiative, entirely funded and carried out by the Ukrainian community from Cluj and Florești, serves as a testament to the power of grassroots collaboration and a heartfelt expression of thanks for the support received from the Romanian people since the war in Ukraine began.
The project, spearheaded by Anna Shevchenko, Vice President of the Association of Ukrainian Youth in Romania (ATUR), faced initial obstacles. Permission had to be obtained from residents, as the playground was on private property. However, the community's determination prevailed, and with the help of local residents, the project was brought to life.
The renovation process was a collaborative effort, with many locals offering assistance, providing electricity and equipment. Even the children in the community joined in, contributing to the transformation of the playground.
Before the renovation, the playground was in a sorry state, with old, rusty, and dangerous equipment that kept families away. Now, the park is safe and welcoming once more, offering a much-needed space for children to play and for families to gather.
What makes this project stand out is its independence. Unlike larger state-supported initiatives underway in Romania, the "Friendship Park" renovation was a community-led initiative, without the involvement of local government, public-private partnerships, or external funding.
