Duisburg's 'Learn to Swim' Project Inspires 1000+ Kids with Art and Safety

More than 140 creative entries flooded in for the 'Duisburg learns to swim' painting competition, impressing Marcel Groß, managing director of Sparkasse Duisburg's sports foundation. The competition, open to children up to the age of twelve, saw young artists depict the ten swimming rules for children. These vibrant artworks will now adorn the walls of Duisburger baths, promoting water safety and swimming skills.

The competition's success was celebrated at the Rhein-Ruhr-Bad, where Oberbürgermeister Sören Link and project participants presented the prizes. Ten lucky children received awards, with the top prize being the 'Golden Swimming Ticket'. This coveted prize offers a year of free entry to all municipal baths and the chance to earn a free swimming badge. The project's reach is substantial, with deputy manager of DuisburgSport, Marc Rüdesheim, revealing that it provides free swimming lessons to around 20% of a graduating class.

The project's impact extends beyond swimming skills. Sören Link believes that swimming is more than just a sport, emphasizing its potential to be life-saving. Christoph Gerth-Butry, deputy chairman of the Stadtsportbund, reports that over 1000 children have participated in the project's course series. The Sparkasse Duisburg, which annually supports the project with 100,000 euros, conducted the jury evaluation for the painting competition.

The 'Duisburg learns to swim' project continues to make waves, engaging children, promoting swimming skills, and fostering creativity. With strong support from local authorities, the Sparkasse Duisburg, and DuisburgSport, the project looks set to continue its vital work, ensuring that Duisburger children learn to swim and stay safe in the water.
