Strengthening Eller Neighborhood Center: A New Initiative to Combat Vacancies and Revitalize Gumbertstraße
The city of Düsseldorf has granted funding for the Gumbertstraße project, aimed at bolstering neighborhood centers and developing innovative strategies to combat vacancies. This initiative comes as a welcome boost for the Eller neighborhood, which has been undergoing a transformation since 1973, thanks to the efforts of the Werbegemeinschaft Eller.
The Werbegemeinschaft Eller, a community marketing group, has been instrumental in making Eller more attractive for residents and visitors alike. They organize popular events such as the Easter and Christmas markets, the Handwerkermarkt, the Gumbertstraßenfest, the Kneipentour, and the närrischen Frühschoppen. The next major event on the calendar is the individuELLER Easter Market on March 26, promising a diverse program for children, Easter market activities, and catering options.
To address the specific needs of the Eller neighborhood center, a project team will be formed, consisting of two employees who will work until the end of 2023. Their focus will be on advising businesses and property owners, strengthening local businesses, and improving the external presentation of Gumbertstraße.
Two working groups have been established within the Werbegemeinschaft, with one focusing on digitalization and the other on events and marketing. The office of Stadt- und Regionalplanung Dr. Jansen GmbH from Cologne has been commissioned to manage the Zentrenmanagement for Eller.
The retail space at Gumbertstraße 173 is now the new home for the Werbegemeinschaft individuEller and the Zentrenmanagement Gumbertstraße. Local businesses in Eller, however, continue to face challenges such as competition from online retailers and struggling with empty storefronts.
To combat these issues, the project will employ a range of strategies. These include revitalization initiatives like mixed-use development and community engagement, vacancy reduction strategies such as offering incentives for new businesses and implementing community programs, enhancing retail spaces through renovation and marketing, promoting conflict resolution and collaboration, and developing economic development plans.
Local surveys, engagement with community leaders, and insights from similar revitalization projects will help tailor these strategies to the unique needs of the Eller neighborhood. All interested parties are invited to contribute to the development of Eller, ensuring a vibrant and thriving community for all.
