Effort initiated to motivate public to enhance security in the HVV (Heavy Rail) system
In a bid to enhance safety on public transport in Hamburg and its surrounding areas, the Hamburg Transport Association (HVV) has initiated a comprehensive campaign. The campaign, supported by prominent figures such as Robert Habeck from the Green Party and Anjes Tjarks, Hamburg's Senator for Transport, aims to raise awareness about civil courage throughout the HVV network.
The campaign will involve workshops where participants will learn how to behave in dangerous situations and how to help others. These workshops, designed to equip citizens with essential skills, will be a key component of the initiative.
One of the innovative measures being introduced is the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to detect potential threats like fights. However, the exact implementation and timeline for the AI system are still unclear, according to Senator Tjarks.
In addition to workshops and AI technology, the campaign will also see an increase in security personnel. This will ensure a more secure environment for passengers on trains, buses, and at stops.
To further enhance safety, emergency call columns have been installed on platforms, and a "wish exit" allows passengers to exit between stops outside the city center after 21:00, with the driver's agreement. There's also a homeward phone available for passengers in need.
The White Ring organisation is involved in the initiative, and actress Rhea Harder-Vennewald has been appointed as the campaign's ambassador. Harder-Vennewald will play a crucial role in promoting the campaign and encouraging citizens to take small, safe steps to ensure passenger safety.
Christiane Wagner from the Hamburg Police stated that there's no one-size-fits-all solution for civil courage. Instead, she emphasised that small acts can make a big difference without putting oneself in danger. Korbutt, the HVV CEO, echoed this sentiment, stating that ensuring passenger safety is a top priority for the HVV.
Posters at stops and screens in stations and vehicles will be used in the campaign to spread awareness and provide advice on how to behave in threatening situations. Korbutt has even learned in a self-defense course that one should sit on the ground and cluck like a chicken loudly in such situations.
The campaign for more civil courage in Hamburg is a significant step towards making public transport safer for all citizens. By empowering citizens with the knowledge and skills to act in dangerous situations, the HVV hopes to create a safer, more secure environment for everyone who uses its services.
