Recent days have seen a surge of movement, connection, and unity between Bergisch Gladbach and its Ukrainian sister city. Led by Mayor Frank Stein, a team departed for Bucha, delivering two fire trucks for their community while participating in the Peace Run. Simultaneously, in Bensberg, peace nails were forged in an inspiring effort called "Forge for Peace."

Here's a guest contribution from the Bergisch Gladbach - Bucha City Partnership Association e.V.

It's All About Relationships

Although Bergisch Gladbach and Bucha are separated by nearly 2,000 kilometers, the same energy of movement, connection, and unity has flowed within both cities these days. The Bergisch Gladbach - Bucha City Partnership Association e.V. has once again demonstrated the essence of dynamic partnership - showing that distance is no obstacle with the right intentions - as two simultaneous actions took place.

From May 13 to 20, nine association members, including Mayor Frank Stein, embarked on a transformative journey to Bucha. They brought along not only fire trucks and a municipal vehicle but also open hearts and a willingness to listen, learn, and engage with their hosts. Together, they participated in the Peace Run in Bucha and organized a festival of German-Ukrainian camaraderie in the city park, filled with music, discussions, photos, and encounters.

"When you work together, distance becomes unnoticeable," says Bergisch Gladbach Mayor Frank Stein. "What connects us is not defined by speeches, but by what we accomplish together, on both shores."

Meanwhile, back in Bergisch Gladbach, efforts were underway to strengthen the bond. During the "Forge for Peace" action, held at the Bergisches Museum in Bensberg, artists collaborated with visitors, forming symbolic peace nails that embodied support. Donations also poured in for projects in Bucha - doubled by the Bethe Foundation.

A Symbiotic Collaboration

"This partnership works seamlessly, like a well-rehearsed team," says association chairman Frank Haag. "Two cities, two cultures - we push forward together, sometimes through varying terrains, but always in harmony. Whatever sparks in one city also illuminates the other."

Jörg Köhler, who organized the Bucha trip, emphasizes: "The equipment we provided is of practical value, no doubt. But the interaction between individuals is just as essential. Our support goes beyond tonnage; it's measured in the hours and minutes we spent together during conversations, encounters, and shared experiences."

Bethe Foundation Bolsters Donations

On May 17, 2025, Arne Meinhardt facilitated the implementation of the forge action in Bergisch Gladbach. "A day filled with energy: sparks flying, discussions about Bucha, curious kids among skilled craftsmen. Each nail was more than just metal, it was a symbol of our unwavering commitment to support our friends in Bucha." In total, donations amounted to 4,250 euros, which the Bethe Foundation matched, distributing the funds equally to benefit Bucha and the expansion of the Bergisches Museum.

Meinhardt extends thanks to all those who made this endeavor possible: the museum team and the association, the master craftsmen, the Bethe Foundation, and the numerous individuals who participated, contributed, and pondered alongside.
