Roselilies: The Pollen-Free, Long-Lasting, and Strikingly Beautiful Hybrid

Roselilies, a hybrid lily variety, have become a popular choice among flower enthusiasts and floral designers for their unique appearance, long vase life, and versatile color options. These lilies, which resemble roses due to their double-petaled blooms, are known for their pollen-free nature, making them an ideal choice for people who suffer from allergies.

Originating in the Netherlands, Roselilies have a relatively recent history. They were bred to combine the aesthetic appeal and fragrance of traditional oriental lilies with the practical benefits of pollen-free flowers. The first pollen-free double-flowered lily was presented by De Looff in 2008 at Keukenhof, one of the world's largest flower gardens in the Netherlands. Today, De Looff Lily Innovation is the only breeder of Roselilies in the world.

Key characteristics of Roselilies include their double petals, which create a voluminous, rose-like flower form, their pollen-free nature, their strong fragrance typical of oriental lilies, their long vase life, and their tall stems that make them ideal for decorative bouquets and displays. They are available in a range of hues, from soft pastels to vibrant pinks and reds, and even in bi-color varieties, with petals that are striped or spotted with contrasting colors.

Roselilies are not only visually striking but also resilient, making them suitable for growing in gardens as ornamental plants. Some notable growers in the Netherlands include Moerman Lilium, Dutch Lily Masters, De Jong Lelies, Van Schie, and Sarah and Michael's Farm, which grows various Roselily varieties, including Roselily Aisha, Roselily Angela, and Roselily Viola.

Roselilies are gaining popularity in floral arrangements and gifts due to their luxurious appearance and suitability for indoor spaces as they cause less allergy and staining issues. They symbolize calm, care, and presence, and are often associated with love, romance, and femininity.

These modern lilies are increasingly cultivated and showcased in prominent floral exhibitions such as Lilytopia. As hybrids, Roselilies require careful growing conditions to manage bloom timing, notably temperature control, to achieve the desired floral display.

Roselilies are exported to over 40 countries by two producers: Zabo Plant and Van den Bos Flowerbulbs. The De Looff Lily Innovation Association, established in 2010, continues to innovate and develop new Roselily varieties, ensuring that this beautiful and practical flower continues to captivate flower lovers worldwide.
