Friday's Freakish Redux: Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis deliver seamless performances in the follow-up to the body-swapping tale
In the cinematic world, 2025 sees the return of the beloved body-swap comedy, Freakier Friday, a sequel to the 2003 classic starring Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis. The new film, 22 years later, follows Anna Coleman (Lohan), now a music producer and mother, and her mother Tess (Curtis), as they get entangled in another body-swap adventure.
The plot revolves around Anna and her teenage daughter Harper, along with Tess and a new character, Lily, a British immigrant and transfer student. After a chaotic incident at school and family tensions over Anna’s upcoming wedding to Lily's father Eric, the four characters find themselves swapping bodies following an earthquake and a psychic's warning.
The body swaps create intricate situations. Anna and Tess must navigate high school and teenage life in the bodies of Harper and Lily, while Harper and Lily use their new adult identities to attempt to disrupt Anna's wedding. Throughout the film, the characters learn to understand each other's perspectives and repair their fractured relationships.
The sequel introduces a multigenerational twist, with Anna and Harper swapping bodies, as well as Tess and Lily. This expansion of the dynamic adds a fresh layer to the original body-switch between mother and daughter, blending humor with heart in a modern setting.
Freakier Friday is directed by Nisha Ganatra, with Jordan Weiss as the writer. The movie features a runtime of 111 minutes, longer than its predecessor, but it lacks sufficient development of Anna and Eric's relationship. The editing can also be jarring, particularly in a montage speeding through Anna and Eric's relationship.
The film's cast includes Maddie Baillio (Butters) and Avan Jogia (Hammons) as fresh additions, with Vanessa Bayer playing the psychic who initiates the body swapping. Jamie Lee Curtis's over-the-top performance, allowed by the movie's premise, is a treat for fans.
Freakier Friday takes a family-driven comedy approach, somewhat different from what was expected for a Freaky Friday sequel. The movie is set to be released on August 8, promising a fun-filled, emotional rollercoaster ride for audiences of all ages.
