The apple harvest in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is currently underway, but this year's yield is expected to be smaller than in previous years. Rolf Horning, a fruit tree consultant, stated to the German Press Agency that approximately 15,000 tons of apples are expected to be picked by the end of October.
Over the last five years, an average of around 26,000 tons of apples were harvested in the region. However, this year's harvest is expected to be smaller due to frosts that occurred in early May. These frosts affected some regions in the Ludwigslust-Parchim district and parts of East Mecklenburg, causing blossoms to freeze.
The apple is the most important tree fruit for farmers in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, with a cultivation area of 1,546 hectares. The primary forms of processing for these apples are puree, juice, and cider. Some apples will also be dried to be added to muesli.
Approximately 85 to 90 percent of the apples from Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania will be processed.
