Gathering once more as a large-scale, nation-wide gathering, Estonia's Dance Celebration serves as a beloved national get-together.

Gathering once more, Estonia's Dance Celebration marks a communal gathering of kin, welcoming all natives.

The XXI Estonian Dance Celebration, set to take place from 2nd to 4th July, is a vibrant and significant event in the rich cultural tapestry of Estonia. As part of the XXVIII Song and Dance Celebration, this year's event involves over 41,000 performers, with approximately 11,000 dancers set to participate.

This year's celebration, themed "Iseoma" - meaning "authentically ours" - emphasises a sense of belonging, identity, and uniqueness. The event serves as a national family reunion, bringing together Estonians in spirit and step, while showcasing the vibrant complexity of what it means to be Estonian.

The decentralised, regional approach to the dance programme is a notable feature of this year's celebration. Instead of concentrating all performances in one location, the festival involves a broad range of regional groups and communities from across Estonia. This approach allows for greater inclusion and participation, highlighting the distinct cultural identities within Estonia's counties while uniting them under a national celebration.

Each region will bring its own flavour to the national stage, with local steps, music, and temperament influencing the choreography. The stage becomes a space where the richness and diversity of Estonian dance traditions are showcased, reinforcing the theme of unity alongside diversity.

Gymnastics and women's groups will add new visual and emotional layers to the performance. Every participant brings hopes and heartbreaks to the stage, where their private stories move in synchrony. The emphasis is on movement, but not for movement's sake - these are steps learned over months or years, passed down through generations.

The dance programme for this year's celebration has been designed around eight distinct cultural regions. This year's Dance Celebration is the most locally rooted in recent history, reflecting a focus on rootedness and community connection. The dramaturg behind the festival, Laura Võigemast, has issued a lyrical invitation for participants to attend the event.

The Dance Celebration continues to evolve while keeping its heart intact. It is a continuation of a historic and culturally vital tradition dating back over 150 years. Historically, these festivals have played a crucial role in preserving Estonian cultural identity and national unity, serving as acts of cultural resistance during times of occupation and struggle for independence.

When 11,000 dancers move as one, the message is that they are many, yet one. This year's Dance Celebration is bold in structure, intimate in spirit, and brimming with the vibrant complexity of being Estonian. Dance groups from outside Estonia will also participate, bringing an international flavour to the event.

The Dance Celebration is more than just a performance; it is a testament to the enduring spirit of Estonia. It is a celebration of kinship and cultural rootedness, a demonstration of unity, and a powerful reminder of Estonia's rich cultural heritage.
