Generous public funding enables Schweriner Zoo to unveil a new play area for its animals.
New Adventure Playground Opens at Schwerin Zoo
Stepping into the world of wildlife has never been more fun for children, as Schwerin Zoo unveiled its latest attraction – a nature-themed play area designed as treehouses. Opened in July 2025, this new adventure playground is located on the "festival meadow" between the farm and meerkat enclosure[1].
The playground boasts five small treehouses, each representing a different profession related to zoo life, such as veterinarian, zoo director, zoo store assistant, and animal hairdresser[1]. These treehouses are interconnected with various climbing elements, encouraging imaginative play, exploration, and physical activity for children[1].
The playground was a collaborative effort with Künstlerische Holzgestaltung Bergmann from Saxony[1]. Over two months, a dedicated team worked tirelessly to construct the playground, ensuring the installation of fall protection measures and a soft wood chip surface for safety[1].
The project was made possible by a successful crowdfunding campaign that raised €100,000[1][2][3]. Significant contributions came from the regional energy and internet company WEMAG, along with numerous donors[1].
The playground aims to educate children by creatively integrating zoo-related professions, fostering an understanding of zoo operations and animal care in a playful environment[1]. This innovative approach makes visiting the zoo more engaging and educational for families, blending learning with active play[1].
Zoo Director Dr. Tim Schikora expressed his happiness about the project's realization, while Caspar Baumgart, commercial director of Wemag, was also enthusiastic about the new zoo playground[1]. The playground is expected to make a visit to the zoo more attractive for families, offering a modern, nature-oriented space designed to delight both children and families[1].
