Highlights of the Previous Year's Events
In the bustling New York City region, the Stephen and Betsy Corman AMC Harriman Outdoor Center, renovated by the Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC) in 2016, serves as a cherished escape for millions of residents. The AMC's work and mission have culminated in various accomplishments in 2022, with a promising outlook for 2023.
One of the significant achievements in 2022 was the federal government's appropriation of $1.1 million for the repair and realignment of the Franconia Notch Loop trail. The AMC will coordinate and lead this project under the direction of the United States Forest Service.
The AMC's efforts extend beyond trail maintenance. In August, the organisation expanded its holdings in the Maine Woods by purchasing the Pleasant River Headwaters Forest in Piscataquis County, Maine, bringing its total holdings to over 100,000 acres.
The AMC's diverse range of activities and resources cater to a wide array of outdoor enthusiasts. In May, the organisation released the 4th edition of AMC's Best Day Hikes in the White Mountains. An excerpt from AMC's Best Backcountry Skiing in the Northeast, Second Edition was one of the top articles in February.
The AMC's educational initiatives are also thriving. AMC Archivist Becky Fullerton gave a talk titled "Wayfinding: Historical Journals, Maps, and Hikers of the Pemigewasset Wilderness" in January.
Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, the AMC continued to engage with its community. The AMC held its 146th Annual Summit remotely in January 2022, with plans for an in-person event in 2023. An article discussing the use of cell phones in the mountains was published in AMC's Appalachia journal in November.
The AMC's top articles of the year cover a multitude of topics, including trip advice, conservation news, history, and recreational updates. For more specific details on the most-read articles in the AMC's journals, one can consult the AMS journal archives or contact the society directly.
The Appalachian Mountain Club's mission remains steadfast: to foster the protection, understanding, and enjoyment of the outdoors. The organisation is currently renovating and redeveloping the much-larger Baker Camp in Harriman State Park, ensuring that the tradition of outdoor adventure continues for generations to come.
In light of the AMC's expanding holdings and commitment to outdoor living, homeowners with an affinity for nature may find a unique welcoming environment for their lifestyle in the Pleasant River Headwaters Forest. Outdoor enthusiasts seeking an adrenaline rush can anticipate venturing into the mountains, perhaps engaging in sports like skiing, with the upcoming release of AMC's Best Backcountry Skiing in the Northeast, Third Edition.
