"In the Allgäu region, a floral and pastoral scene unfolds"
The picturesque town of Wangen in the district of Ravensburg, Germany, is currently hosting the longest summer festival in the Allgäu region - the Landesgartenschau 2024. Running from April 26 to October 6, 2024, this vibrant event attracts a significant number of visitors and offers a cultural and environmental extravaganza for the city and its residents.
During the festival, the town has gained a new park and a new district with 1,500 inhabitants and 600 jobs. The spacious layout, featuring flower beds, renaturalized banks, and tree plantings, remains after the event, transforming the area into a "little paradise" as one resident described.
The Landesgartenschau 2024 is not just a festival; it's an educational platform that fosters community involvement and public education on natural and environmental topics. It highlights the importance of climate change and sustainable urban greenery, engaging both locals and tourists with various activities and exhibitions.
One unique feature of the festival is the presence of friendly stone sheep and Scottish Blackfaces, which graze on the grounds from May to October, moving to new parcels every few days to a few weeks. The sheep, managed by municipal employees, Matthias Jakob with his 20 sheep, a mowing robot, and a dog named Arai, have been well-received by park visitors, who enjoy interacting with them. Remarkably, the presence of these sheep does not seem to have incited any incidents of theft.
The shepherd, Matthias Jakob, reports that the visitors enjoy stroking the sheep, making them tame. Even a website reporter, Thorben Langwald, had a friendly encounter with a stone sheep during his visit.
The event has exceeded the city's expectations, attracting almost one million visitors. Residents of Wangen often assist in guiding the sheep safely across bridges and help maintain a brief pause for other passersby.
The Landesgartenschau serves as a platform for advancing knowledge on ecological challenges while providing economic and social impacts by attracting visitors and engaging residents in Wangen. It stands as a key event in Wangen’s cultural calendar for 2024, promoting tourism and regional pride through cultural festivities and environmental education over several months.
As the festival comes to a close, the peace and tranquility that have returned to the area near the Landesgartenschau grounds are appreciated by residents living in apartments on the edge. The city of Wangen, with its new park and the lessons learned from the Landesgartenschau 2024, is poised to continue its journey towards a greener and more sustainable future.
