"Jackie O's Residence Transforms to Studio 54 - The spinning disco ball in this Manhattan apartment's living room encapsulates the NYC nightlife vibe of the iconic 70s disco club, Studio 54."
In the heart of the ever-electrifying NYC, Colleen and John Cook desired a sanctuary that pulsed with the city's rhythm. Particularly for Colleen, the executive director of a theater company immersed in art and culture, having a bolt-hole in the Lenox Hill neighborhood of the Upper East Side was a dream come true.
Her friend, Broadway actress Betsy Wolfe, recommended the couple to hire the services of the renowned Crystal Sinclair Designs team to reimagine and decorate their apartment. A savvy choice indeed!
The 230 square meter apartment resides in an Upper East Side building designed by the legendary Italian-American architect, Rosario Candela, in 1938. The iconic Studio 54, a former nightclub promising debaucherous nights for 1970s luminaries such as Andy Warhol, Debbie Harry, and Bianca Jagger, served as the inspiration behind this transformative project.
The modern living room, adorned with an eye-catching marble checkered fireplace hood, set the design direction for Crystal's team. Though the fireplace takes center stage, a majestic disco ball adds a sprinkle of stardust. When illuminated, the room dazzles - just what Colleen desired to give her latent love for the vibrant and fun a breath of life.
Crystal, known for her imaginative solutions and gift for creating drama-infused homes, ensured the space hummed with energy. A riot of colors pervaded the apartment, tempered slightly to avoid jarring the senses. The spaces flooded with natural light were white, while the other rooms saw contrasting colors to increase the volume of the design.
Revamping the old with the new was key, so decorative moulding details were used to add a classical touch to the fun furnishings often paired with more abstract artworks. To balance the glitzier material choices like Arabescato, Lilac, and Nero Marquina marbles, and mixed metal finishes, Crystal turned to textiles such as mohair, velvet, leather, and linen, thereby adding warmth.
The dining room, with its quirky curved wall, was the last piece of the puzzle but proved to be the pièce de résistance. The sociable homeowners agree - it's a fun, bustling space perfect for hosting pals over dinner and late-night chats.
