Mönchengladbach, North Rhine-Westphalia is inviting residents and visitors to celebrate its 50th anniversary with a unique bike tour. The city, formed on January 1, 1975, through the merger of Alt-Mönchengladbach, Rheydt, and Wickrath, is offering two engaging tours to explore the city's transformation over the past five decades.
Tour 1: "50 Years Together as a City"
Registration is required for participation in Tour 1 via Andreas Henke (MGMG). You can reach him at 0 21 61/98 54 222 or email him at [email protected]. This tour starts on Saturday, July 26, at 2 pm, from the City Church at Edmund-Erlemann-Platz. The tour is expected to take between 2 to 2.5 hours to complete, and it passes through Rheydt, ending at Schloss Wickrath. After the tour, a visit to the lake festival at Schloss Wickrath is recommended. The return journey for Tour 1 is independent, either by bike or by train (RB 33) from Wickrath station.
Tour 2: "50 Years Together as a City"
Registration for Tour 2 is also handled by Andreas Henke (MGMG). The starting point for this tour is the City Church. Tour 2 passes through Rheydt and ends at Platz der Republik at Mönchengladbach Central Station. This tour is approximately 30 kilometers long and is expected to take between 4 to 4.5 hours to complete. The use of e-bikes is recommended for Tour 2. Tour 2 starts on Sunday, August 24, at 11 am.
The organizers aim to make the transformation of Mönchengladbach tangible and show the connections between its districts through these bike tours. The route for both tours passes by significant locations, shedding light on the historical background of the city merger and the changes experienced by the districts over the past five decades. This municipal reorganization significantly shaped the city of Mönchengladbach, impacting it spatially, culturally, and in terms of identity.
The bike tour is more than just a sporting activity; it's an invitation to interactively explore the city's history. There are several stops along Tour 1 with historical and development-related facts. For accurate and updated details, we recommend checking local Mönchengladbach event listings, official municipal websites, or cycling clubs in that area. They typically provide announcements, route maps, and registration details for such events.
