In the picturesque town of Wendeburg, Germany, renowned sculptor Thomas Doneis is nearing completion of his magnum opus – a meticulously crafted, 21-tonne sandstone model of Schloss Neuschwanstein, a Bavarian castle that has now been included in the UNESCO World Heritage sites.

Thomas Doneis's unique working method involves working from photographs to achieve the perfect replication of the castle's intricate details. Over the past ten years, he has painstakingly sculpted even the smallest figures, from a weather vane to crowns and a rider, demonstrating his exceptional skill and dedication.

The model, which stands in a 1:62 scale, has attracted widespread attention since Schloss Neuschwanstein's World Heritage status was announced. Doneis has received constant calls, congratulations, and inquiries about his work, with offers pouring in from both the USA and the United Arab Emirates.

However, Doneis has decided against covering the model's roofs with copper, opting instead for a more authentic, weathered look. His workshop, housed in the former stable on the farm at Peiner Street, reflects his love for the castle and its history. Adorning the walls are pictures of the Nibelungen saga, Ludwig II, and a small sculpture of Richard Wagner, all contributing to the Bavarian sky-themed atmosphere.

Despite the offers, Doneis plans to complete his masterpiece in October. His supporter, Markus Wunderling, has been instrumental in marketing the sculpture. There is also interest in exhibiting the sculpture permanently, with China showing particular interest. Doneis is currently working on a photo album titled "Swansong" about his work, which will undoubtedly capture the beauty and intricacy of his creation.

Thomas Doneis's journey as a sculptor began as a hobby. Teaching himself the art, he has since carved out a niche for himself in the world of sculpture, creating copper armour for a little knight and demonstrating his versatility in his work. His dedication and skill have made him a beacon of artistic excellence in Wendeburg.

Thomas Doneis's home-and-garden, reflecting his love for Schloss Neuschwanstein, is adorned with pictures of the Nibelungen saga, Ludwig II, and a small sculpture of Richard Wagner, creating a Bavarian sky-themed atmosphere. Doneis's lifestyle, dedicated to his work, involves painstakingly sculpting even the smallest figures in a 1:62 scale model of the castle, upholding a legacy that has now been recognized as part of the UNESCO World Heritage sites.
