Late Summer Planting Combination Brings Vibrant Chaos to Water Lane Walled Garden

Jo Thompson has introduced a stunning late summer planting combination in the Water Lane Walled Garden, creating a natural, meadow-like chaos that contrasts the formal stone planter. The planting, which uses a combination of reds, oranges, purples, and yellows, was designed to blend well against a neutral, open background.

The dominant stars of the mix include the 'Rudbeckia', 'Helenium 'Riverton Beauty'', and purple lobelia, with the 'Asclepias curassavica' and 'Lobelia x speciosa' 'Hadspen Purple' adding an unusual shape and bright flowers, respectively. The 'Achillea' provides pink umbels to soften the color palette, while the 'Nepeta' offers 'neutral' spires to form a pale background wash. The grasses and nepeta help blur the edges of the planting, integrating it with surrounding grassy areas.

The 'Helenium 'Riverton Beauty'' blooms from July to September, reaching a height of 1m and width of 50cm, while the 'Lobelia x speciosa' 'Hadspen Purple' blooms with purple flowers and purple-tinged stems from July to September, reaching a height of 60cm and width of 40cm. The 'Achillea millefolium' 'Lilac Beauty' blooms with lilac flowers that fade with age from May to September, reaching a height and width of 80cm x 60cm.

The 'Nepeta nuda' 'Romany Dusk' has dark stems and pale flowers, blooming from July to August, reaching a height of 1m and width of 40cm. The 'Pennisetum villosum' is a perennial grass that blooms from July to September, reaching a height and width of 60cm. The 'Rudbeckia hirta' 'Enchanted Velvet Flame' has maroon cone-flowers and blooms from July to October, reaching a height of 50cm and width of 30cm.

The 'Lobelia tupa' blooms with red tubular flowers from July to October, reaching a height of 1.2m and width of 90cm. The 'Pennisetum' adds tufted whitish rabbit-tail panicles, providing texture to the planting. The 'Salvia x jamensis' 'Ignition Purple' blooms with blue-purple flowers from June to October, reaching a height and width of 50cm.

The 'Asclepias curassavica' has red and yellow umbels and blooms from June to September. The 'Pennisetum villosum' is a perennial grass that blooms from July to September.

After October, the asclepias can be removed, and the perennials cut back, paving the way for the addition of spring bulbs. The heavy stone planter used for this planting was previously lying empty in the garden at Water Lane.

This combination enjoys the heat of the sun and can be watered in the morning to keep it going through October. The grasses and nepeta are used to blur the edges in this planting, creating a natural, meadow-like chaos that contrasts the formal stone planter.
