Introducing the Triumph Thruxton 400: A Premium Mid-Capacity Café Racer

Triumph Motorcycles is set to expand its 400cc range with the introduction of the Thruxton 400. This premium café racer is poised to offer a unique blend of retro styling and modern performance.

The Thruxton 400 will be powered by a 398cc, single-cylinder, liquid-cooled engine, shared with the Speed 400 and Scrambler 400 X. The engine is expected to produce around 41.4 to 42 bhp at 9,000 rpm and 37.5 Nm of torque at 7,500 rpm, paired with a 6-speed transmission and slip-and-assist clutch.

Key specifications and features include:

  • Engine: 398 cc, liquid-cooled, single-cylinder, 4-valve DOHC, with fuel injection and a 12:1 compression ratio.
  • Power & Torque: Approximately 41.4 to 42 bhp and 37.5 Nm torque, tuned for sporty performance within the mid-capacity segment.
  • Chassis & Suspension:
  • USD telescopic front forks with about 135 mm travel (10 mm longer travel than Speed 400).
  • Rear monoshock with 130 mm travel.
  • Shorter wheelbase of approximately 1,376 mm, supporting agile handling.
  • 17-inch alloy wheels.
  • Brakes: Front and rear disc brakes with dual-channel ABS.
  • Ergonomics & Design:
  • Classic café racer styling with a semi-fairing, teardrop fuel tank, slim tail section, clip-on handlebars, and a forward-leaning sporty riding position.
  • Retro elements combined with modern features like full LED lighting and bar-end mirrors.
  • Weight & Dimensions:
  • Kerb weight around 183 kg.
  • Seat height approximately 795 mm for good accessibility.
  • Instrumentation & Electronics:
  • Semi-digital instrument cluster with an analog tachometer and digital speedometer, tripmeter, odometer, and fuel gauge.
  • Switchable ABS and traction control for safety.
  • Ride-by-wire throttle and slip & assist clutch.
  • USB-C charging port and full LED lighting.
  • Other Features: Adjustable windscreen, passenger footrest, engine kill switch, and fuel injection for compliance with BS6 norms.

The Thruxton 400 is expected to have rear-set clip-on low-set handlebars and subtly rear-set foot pegs for a dedicated riding position. Global test cars of the Thruxton 400 have been spotted running on Pirelli tyres, but the Indian model will likely run on cheaper ones from local manufacturers.

The Thruxton 400 may inherit features like all-LED lighting, a digital-analogue instrument cluster, dual-channel ABS, and a slipper clutch from the Speed 400. It may also undergo slightly revised ergonomics and cosmetic differences to emphasize its sporty character.

The Thruxton 400 will likely have a 6-speed transmission and slip-and-assist clutch. It may also feature a teardrop fuel tank, a ribbed seat for a retro aesthetic, and a bare-bones rear end with a tiny taillight and grab rail. The front fairing resembles a fighter jet and may accommodate a circular LED headlamp.

The Thruxton 400 is expected to be priced at around ₹2.80 lakh (ex-showroom), making it the priciest in Triumph's 400cc stable in India. Other upcoming Triumph bikes include the Bonneville 700, Scrambler 400 X, Scrambler 400 XC, Speed 400, and Tiger 900.

This bike blends Triumph’s heritage café racer styling with updated chassis, suspension, and electronics, creating an accessible yet premium motorcycle for both new and experienced riders. The Thruxton 400 targets riders who want a retro-inspired café racer with modern performance, handling, and practical features suited for spirited yet manageable riding in the mid-capacity segment.

The Thruxton 400 is not only a premium café racer in Triumph's 400cc range, but it also extends home-and-garden aesthetics with its classic design and retro elements, such as the teardrop fuel tank and clip-on handlebars. This bike's modern features, like electric-vehicle-inspired ride-by-wire throttle and slip & assist clutch, make it an ideal choice for those seeking a blend of lifestyle and sports-oriented cars performance within the home-and-garden and cars realms.
