Living in a Constant Chaos: Navigating Home Renovations and Everyday Life, and Surviving the Process

The Home Boys, David and Andrew Harrison-Colley, have made a name for themselves in the world of interiors and lifestyle with their warm, witty tone and unapologetically stylish aesthetic. This dynamic duo began their journey on Instagram, chronicling the design journey of their London home. Now, they have expanded their conversation through a Substack newsletter, offering longer-form reflections on home life, design trends, shopping edits, and personal stories.

Their first renovation project was a flat in Brixton, which they swapped for two places in Suffolk. One is now a holiday let, while the other is a work in progress. The unfinished extension, named 'The Threshing Barn', is located on the Harrison-Colley family's farm in Devon, England. The other, a demolished carpenter's workshop, is also part of the project.

The Home Boys advocate for a lived-in look in their homes, preferring layers of vintage pieces, second-hand bargains, and a few on-trend items. They believe a home should tell one's story, even if it's a little messy. In fact, they admit their home is often messy, especially during renovations. But they will be real about the mess, the compromises, and the small wins that keep them going.

Their approach to home decor is far from strict. Instead, they aim for balance, suggesting a mix of old and new items. Vintage pieces are mixed with modern ones, rooms are allowed to grow and change over time, and space is left around items to prevent clutter and maintain a calm atmosphere. This balance is evident in their designs, as demonstrated by a simple dining table with mismatched old chairs or a second-hand sofa made contemporary with neutral cushions.

David and Andrew Harrison-Colley have over 75,000 followers on Instagram, where they share a curated mix of room reveals, DIY upgrades, product favourites, and interiors inspiration. They have recently joined a platform's Open House to share their renovation progress and knowledge from various projects.

In their column, they will keep telling the honest story of their renovation, showing vintage bargains they couldn't leave behind and sharing how they mix them with modern pieces. They aim for rooms that feel collected over time and reflect their personalities, not just current trends.

The Home Boys' unique approach to home design and their honest, engaging storytelling make them a must-follow for anyone interested in interiors and lifestyle.
