Robust Bubble Gum Wrapper Chain: Gary Duschl's Lasting World Record

After thirty years, a remarkable world record for the longest bubble gum wrapper chain remains unbroken. Gary Duschl, a retired resident of Virginia, United States, has been the holder of this unusual title since 1994.

What started as a childhood hobby in Canada has now solidified Duschl's place in record books. Inspired by older children folding their gum papers into lengthy chains on the playground, the then 14-year-old Duschl took up the unconventional pastime. He soon emerged victorious in his first competition, creating the longest chain in his class, later in his entire school.

Today, Duschl's world record is a remarkable 37.4 kilometers (23.226 miles), surpassing his previous record eight times. The inception of his world recognition came somewhat serendipitously in 1992, when he visited the Ripley's Museum in Ontario. Upon seeing an enormous bubble gum wrapper chain hanging from the ceiling, he realized his own chain was far larger.

Jolted by this discovery and competitive spirit, Duschl claimed the world record in just two years, breaking the previous record holder's chain of 2.25 kilometers.

Although no one has come close to challenging his record, Duschl continues his passionate pursuit. He aspires to extend his chain to the length of a marathon (42 kilometers, or 26.2 miles), leaving him three miles short of his goal. After that, reaching 45 kilometers (28 miles), the length of a beach in Virginia where he has lived since 2002, would be a poetic finale to his impressive achievement.

Additional PerspectiveIt is worth noting that, at 32,555.68 meters (106,810 feet), Duschl's bubble gum wrapper chain falls about 9,639.32 meters (31,569 feet) short of the length of a marathon, providing a testament to both its scale and its potential for expansion. Incorporating more gum wrappers to extend it to the length of a marathon would certainly be a substantial undertaking.
