Massive Protests Erupt on Ascension Day in Berlin

BERLIN- Ascension Day, celebrated across Germany on Thursday, saw an influx of day-trippers seeking fresh air in Berlin. Among them, some groups of men opted for a unique outdoor excursion, combining a beer and ice cream cart tour amidst temperatures ranging between 17 and 19 degrees Celsius. The German Weather Service (DWD) forecast variable cloud cover and predominantly dry weather for the day.

Ascension Day, or Christi Himmelfahrt in German, holds historical and cultural importance, commemorating the ascension of Jesus Christ into Heaven, as recorded in the Bible. This event transpired approximately 40 days after Easter Sunday, marking the end of Jesus' physical presence on Earth and the start of his heavenly reign.

Beyond its religious connotations, Ascension Day has evolved into a traditionally male-centric day, with groups of men often touring together with traditional ice cream carts. In Germany, it also coincides with Father's Day, while in Berlin, its cultural significance is more of a convergence rather than a direct historical or traditional link.

Looking ahead to the weekend, the DWD expects clouds to thicken late Thursday, with light rain in some areas. The low temperatures will range from 14 to 12 degrees Celsius. On Friday, skies will gradually clear, reaching warm highs of 23 to 25 degrees Celsius, accompanied by a fresh west wind. The weekend promises to be summery, with temperatures potentially reaching up to 27 degrees Celsius. While Saturday will predominantly be pleasant and dry, there is a possibility of localized heavy rain and gusty winds on Sunday.

On the day following Ascension Day, some men might choose to continue their outdoor adventures, embarking on a tradition of touring the city with ice cream carts amidst the home-and-garden ambiance of the changing weather. By the weekend, the German Weather Service forecasts a refreshing shift in weather, with temperatures rising for outdoor-living enthusiasts to enjoy their lifestyle under warmer skies.
