Measures for Deterring Oak Borer Beetles

In the heart of Germany, the City of Giessen has announced a city-wide initiative to combat the European Pine Sawfly (EPS), an inconspicuous moth that lays its larvae in pines, potentially causing damage to trees and affecting humans.

Starting from May 10, 2023, the Garden Department, in collaboration with several property management services including Justus Liebig University, the Student Union Giessen, WevaTo, Wohnbau Giessen, the Vitos Clinic, and others, will take action against the EPS.

The treatment process will involve the application of NeemProtect, an approved agent, using a spraying procedure. Approximately 2000 trees will be treated, with priority given to sensitive areas such as kindergartens, schools, playgrounds, sports facilities, recreational areas, park areas, and residential areas with high pine populations. The Anneröder settlement, known for its high pine population, is among the areas to be prioritized.

Citizens are advised to follow the instructions of the on-site staff to ensure that the necessary work can be completed quickly and effectively. The Garden Department assures citizens that the treatment does not pose any danger to them.

The measures against the EPS are weather-dependent, and delays may occur. The treatment route includes the Inner City, East City, Rödgen, Weiskirchen, North City, West City, Petersweiher/ Schiffenberg, South City, and Kleinlinden, Allendorf, Lützellinden.

It's important to note that the hairs of the EPS caterpillars can cause allergies. However, the Garden Department has assured the safety of the treatment process.

The fight against the EPS is expected to last until the end of next week. Residents are encouraged to stay informed and follow the updates provided by the City of Giessen.
