Meat product widespread in the Southern region undergoes recall due to potential presence of foreign substances

If you're eager to fire up the barbie or cook up a sheet pan supper with some bratwurst, you might want to give your fridge a quick check.

On April 5, the US Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) issued a major recall for Johnsonville BRATS Cheddar Bratwurst. The affected states include Georgia, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, Tennessee, Virginia, and Wisconsin. Grocery stores in these regions, along with those in Indiana, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, and Wisconsin are all part of this recall.

The recall is due to a potential contamination with hard plastic found in certain packages of the fresh pork bratwurst. Approximately 22,672 pounds of the product, packaged in five pieces in sealed firm trays, may be affected. The contaminated meat was produced on February 5, 2025.[1][2][3]

The recall was initiated after two consumers reported finding hard plastic in the bratwurst they had purchased. Fortunately, there have been no confirmed reports of injury.[1][2] The foreign material could lead to serious health issues, earning the recall a Class I status, which is the highest level of alert from the FSIS.[4]

To identify affected packages, look for a 19-oz. package of Johnsonville BRATS Cheddar Bratwurst with a package code B9FOD and an establishment number "Est. 1647" on the front of the label.[1][2][4] If you possess such a package, the FSIS suggests disposing of it immediately or returning it to your place of purchase for a refund - do not consume.[1][2] For questions regarding the recall, you can reach out to Johnsonville Customer Relations Coordinator Amanda Fritsch at 888-556-2728.[1]
