Mercadona Confirms Opening of Shopping Outlets in Lisbon, Portugal
Spanish retail giant Mercadona sets its sights on Lisbon, announceing the opening of two stores in the city this November – Alta de Lisboa and Quinta do Lambert (Lumiar). With 10 stores planned for the country this year, the expansion marks a significant stride in the retailer's growth, boosting its existing 60 locations in Portugal.
According to a report from ECO, Greater Lisbon will also welcome a Mercadona store in Frielas (Loures) in October. The company has already established a presence in Oeiras, Sintra (3), Torres Vedras, and Vila Franca de Xira within the region.
Three stores, including Fafe, Santa Iria de Azóia, and Penafiel, have already opened this year, with Mercadona estimating a total investment of 157 million euros in 2022. The expansions come after a total investment of 219 million euros in Portugal last year.
Mercadona is actively recruiting for the 180 jobs to be created by the new stores in Lisbon. The available positions are for supermarket operators and maintenance assistants, with all vacancies offering a training period, permanent contracts, and immediate pay.
The company will shoulder all expenses during the training period, including meals, transportation, accommodation, and regular trips home for employees every 15 days. As of now, Mercadona employs 7,000 individuals in Portugal, 1,700 of whom joined the retailer last year. In 2022, Mercadona expects to hire 750 people for its 10 stores.
At the start of the year, Mercadona announced an 8.5% increase for all employees, setting their starting salary at 14,963.90 euros gross per year. The salary can progress up to 20,465.10 euros within a maximum of four years, alongside a daily food allowance, Sunday, holiday, and night work hour allowances, annual bonuses, and individual and company goal rewards.
