The Museum Stadt Lünen is set to participate in the nationwide "Tag des offenen Denkmals" on Sunday, 14th September, 2025. This event invites visitors to explore several monuments in Lünen, including the Geschwister-Scholl-Gesamtschule, the Alte Schule Alstedde, the Villa Urbahn, and the Gewerkschaft Eisenhuette Westfalia.
The Geschwister-Scholl-Gesamtschule, a notable example of humane post-war architecture, will open its protected building part on Sunday from 11 am to 3 pm. Built between 1956 and 1962 according to plans by architect Hans Scharoun, guided tours will be offered at full-hour intervals on the day of the monument. Visitors can also freely view the school garden.
The Alte Schule Alstedde, an 1865 ensemble with school building, teacher's apartment, stable, and school garden, will open its doors on Sunday from 11 am to 5 pm. This school is a rare example of the so-called "one-room school". Guided tours will be offered at the Alte Schule Alstedde on the day of the monument, and the reconstructed school garden is maintained by the Arbeitskreis für Umwelt und Heimat e.V. Please note that access to the buildings at Alte Schule Alstedde is not barrier-free.
The Villa Urbahn, a protected monument since 2017, will be open from Saturday, 13th September, to Sunday, 14th September, from 10 am to 6 pm. Designed by Anton Huber in 1925 and featuring a Zöllinger roof, the Villa Urbahn houses the Museum of the City of Lünen. Permanent exhibitions on the city's and cultural history, guided tours, and a children's painting workshop will be available for visitors. Drinks will also be available on site.
The Gewerkschaft Eisenhuette Westfalia, an industrial building from around 1870 belonging to one of the oldest industrial plants in Lünen, will be accessible from 11 am to 4 pm on Sunday. Visitors will gain insights into the history of the site, which is now part of the Erlebnisreich Campus. Additionally, drinks will be available on site. The restored Gewerkschaft Eisenhuette Westfalia offers conference and event rooms.
The motto for the event is "Worthwhile: priceless or irreplaceable?". The Alte Schule Alstedde on Alter Kirchweg and the Villa Urbahn on Graf-Adolf-Straße are among the participating monuments. At Alte Schule Alstedde, additional entertainment includes coffee and cake, as well as musical performances in the style of around 1860.
