Mushroom Collecting Season Opens in Baden-Württemberg: Learn, Taste, and Preserve

Mushroom enthusiasts in Baden-Württemberg can now collect up to one kilogram of species per person per day, with certain mushroom species protected for personal consumption. The large mushroom exhibition in Großerlach-Grab on 11th and 12th promises a fascinating display of up to 300 different species, along with expert advice and mushroom dishes.

To preserve mushroom, freezing, drying, or pickling can be used. However, proper drying is crucial. Successful collection requires knowing where and when specific species grow, and being reasonable about what to collect.

The exhibition is an excellent opportunity for beginners to learn about edible species and their poisonous look-alikes. Mushroom expert Beate Siegel warns of the risks involved in reckless collecting, as it can be life-threatening. Beginners are advised to avoid gilled mushroom to exclude deadly poisoning.

Mushroom should be stored and processed on the same day, with leftovers stored in the refrigerator overnight in a sieve. Common mistakes include collecting old or spoiled mushroom, which can cause food poisoning, and not cleaning mushroom directly in the forest.

The next large mushroom exhibition in Großerlach-Grab is scheduled for 11th and 12th, 2025, offering mushroom consultations during opening hours. Responsible collecting and proper handling ensure a safe and enjoyable mushrooming experience.
