Navigate by the markings: "Main Streets" art showcase at the Altonaer Museum
Unleashing the Ordinary: André Lützen's 'Main Street Germany' Showcase
Photographer André Lützen, born in 1963 and hailing from Hamburg, has ventured into uncharted territories, capturing the charm and essence of everyday America in his iconic photo book. However, this time around, he didn't need to cross continents for his latest exhibition - "Main Street Germany. Photographs by André Lützen" at the Altona Museum features snapshots taken right here in Germany!
As John Lennon famously said, "Before Elvis, there was nothing" - implying that a cultural phenomenon like Elvis Presley was unprecedented in pop culture. Andrei Lützen, the German lensman, has been hunting for such cultural icons, but he found that the allure and significance of contemporary America were rooted deeply in the past. Inspired, he embarked on numerous photo series and books, capturing life in Hanoi, North Russia, India, and even Khartoum, creating a visual symphony of global landscapes.
Engaging Exhibition Experience
Lützen's new works exhibit a striking minimalism that enchants viewers. There's nothing out of the ordinary about these photographs; they simply depict Germany as it truly is. Lützen's lens captured images from all 16 federal states. From dull architecture to walls and fences, occasional disturbing elements, shop windows, street signs, and advertising boards - Lützen's photographs are a comprehensive representation of German everyday life.

A question lingers: What does it truly mean to be German? These images, at first glance, present an intriguing puzzle. One might ask, is this German? That gray garage door, the bus stop next to a red brick wall, the rural intersection with open fields and blue sky? The cul-de-sac and the small colorful carousel? The Altona Museum's exhibition is unlike any other, offering not only the visual narrative but also guided tours and photo workshops.
