OpenAI, SK Telecom Unveil $500B AI Data Center 'Stargate Korea'

OpenAI, the renowned AI company, has announced a significant partnership with South Korean telecom giant SK Telecom. Together, they will explore building an AI data center in South Korea, named 'Stargate Korea'. The project, with an investment commitment of up to $500 billion, aims to boost AI development and secure energy generation. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman recently met with South Korean President Lee Jae Myung and corporate leaders in Seoul to unveil these plans.

The Stargate project, a joint venture between OpenAI, SoftBank, and Oracle, is set to expand computing infrastructure for AI development and delivery. While the partner for the development of the Flying Data Center for Stargate, announced in South Korea, remains unmentioned, OpenAI has plans to build six AI data centers across the United States. These include two more in Texas, one in New Mexico, one in Ohio, and another in an undisclosed Midwest location.

OpenAI has also partnered with Samsung and SK to provide chips and solutions for the $500 billion Stargate AI infrastructure project. Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix will ramp up production of advanced chips to meet OpenAI's memory demands. Furthermore, OpenAI has reached agreements with Samsung affiliates to collaborate on data center technologies and potentially expand local capacity. In an effort to tackle land scarcity, reduce cooling costs, and cut carbon emissions, Samsung and OpenAI are committed to developing floating data centers.

The Stargate project, with its substantial investment and strategic partnerships, is poised to significantly impact South Korea's semiconductor industry. President Lee Jae Myung has hailed these partnerships as a major opportunity for job creation and solidifying South Korea's role in AI. As OpenAI continues to expand its data center footprint, both in the United States and internationally, the AI landscape is set to undergo substantial growth and innovation.
