Oppenheim initiates endeavor for aesthetical enhancement of utility boxes

The picturesque city of Oppenheim, located in Germany, has embarked on an exciting new initiative to redesign its utility boxes. This project, spearheaded by Philipp Schlaak, the deputy mayor of Oppenheim, aims to breathe new life into the city's infrastructure while engaging the local community, particularly its young inhabitants.

Schlaak expressed his delight at the enthusiastic participation of children and young people, with several kindergartens, schools, the youth center, and organizations such as Jugendrotkreuz Nierstein-Oppenheim agreeing to take part. The project encourages local children and young people to get creative, with no specific theme requirements, offering them free rein in their designs.

The first utility boxes to be redesigned are those of EWR in Oppenheim. The project will run from August to October, and Schlaak has emphasized that there are only a few basic rules in the project's design process. The city has chosen not to involve professional artists in this project, instead opting for a community-led approach.

Materials like primer and outdoor-grade paint suitable for metal surfaces, brushes, rollers, and spray paint for detailed and broad coverage, clear protective sealant to protect the artwork from weather and vandalism, stencils or masking tape if detailed designs are involved, and cleaning supplies to prep the surface are all essential for the project. Schlaak has stated that any materials or financial contributions would be appreciated for the project.

The city of Oppenheim is seeking financial supporters for the utility box redesign project. Potential contributors could include local government or city arts and public works departments, community development grants, local businesses sponsoring neighborhood beautification, arts councils or nonprofit arts organizations, crowdfunding or community fundraising efforts, or individual donors.

Schlaak is the point of contact for those interested in participating in the project. He can be reached via email at [email protected] or by phone at 0175-9560341. The project is a community initiative by the people of Oppenheim, for the people of Oppenheim, and Schlaak emphasizes that it is still seeking both participants and financial supporters.

This unique project not only promises to enhance the aesthetic appeal of Oppenheim but also offers a platform for local children and young people to showcase their creativity. The city encourages everyone who shares this vision to get involved and contribute to this community-led initiative.
